Putting the tea in The Pilateas Club
The first time I felt truly comfortable exercising was when a friend took me to a women-only pop-up class. Being surrounded by women in a relaxed, unintimidating space made me realise how important that sense of comfort is when trying something new.
I knew that I wasn’t the only one who felt more comfortable in a women-only space and I wanted to recreate that feeling. I organised Pilates classes at a local West Auckland bowling club with no idea how it would turn out. The result? An incredible group of women showing up and trying something they had never done before. I loved seeing complete strangers come together and make connections; the looks we gave each other when the instructors’ counts were taking far too long, how we laughed through the challenging exercises we knew would make us hurt the next morning, and how after class we stayed back to chat for a while.
I fell in love with this little club I had created and wanted to make it permanent - and so, The Pilateas Club was born.
This space is not just for Pilates classes - I want it to be a sanctuary for all women to come and enjoy some time for ourselves. A space to build friendships, share goals, and become stronger together without feeling conscious about ourselves. Oh, and of course, to stay back after class for a cup of tea.
